Changes to Residence Permit Requirements for Foreigners in Turkey

As of July 2022, foreign nationals are no longer able to obtain a residence permit through renting a house in Turkey. In addition, 1169 neighborhoods in 62 different provinces in the country have been closed to foreign residents. This means that even if a foreign national purchases property in one of these closed neighborhoods, they will not be able to obtain a residence permit.

Previously, foreigners who wanted to live in Turkey were able to apply for a residence permit with a rental agreement. However, recent changes to the process for obtaining a residence permit for foreigners in Turkey now require foreign nationals to own property in the country in order to apply for a residence permit. As of April 27, 2022, foreign nationals must have a property value of at least $75,000 in large cities and $50,000 in small cities in order to obtain a residence permit as a property owner in Turkey.

It is worth noting that the investment limit for obtaining citizenship for foreigners in Turkey has also been increased from $250,000 to $400,000.
